big news from Palm Springs!

"every day a little death." that Sondheim song is on my mental playlist. never know when it'll surface.

over the weekend I experiencd another little death. I was at one of the pools at Inn Exile with the small plastic bag which contain the Century Dimes (TCD). in my writing I use little punctuation. & I can't remember using an excalmation point which gets such overuse it's lost its punch. but I'm forever thinking of new things to do with TCD. so my plan was to use them to form an exclamation point in the resort's steam room.

I automatically count the dimes when I remove them from the plastic bag. it's also my habit to count them before returning them. to my shock I discoverd but 8 of the coins.

immediately I returnd to their last outing. during a performance of "Pee Wee's Playhouse" they remaind in their bag in my pocket. following the show Paul Reubens did a q & a for special fans. I didn't imagine I'd be able to directly involve Reubens in my project & I was right. never a multi-tasker I concentratd on photographng Reubens but at the same time I did take out the dimes. the question is did I remove them from the bag? I truly can't recall. if I did then it's possible the missing coins were swept away by the Club Nokia janitor. if not I lost them even earlier.

after counting the remaining dimes enumerable times I calmd myself & allowd chance to work in the piece.

obviously TCD is suddenly at an end. the surviving 8 are now incomplete -- like seeing the Andrews Sisters on Broadway after LaVerne had died. I expectd to be finding things for TCD to do on my deathbed. but I won't live thru the whole century anyway so 2010 contains an important number for the piece. I'm at ease with the work's demise. it gives me a shove to finish Current Seas which opens with the work.

what to do with the survivors? the archivist in me won't allow them to disappear even if they lack the power of all 10. perhaps I'll commission a jewelry-maker to use them in a bracelet. or find a bookbinder who'll employ them in a limitd edition of TCD. that's a whole new project.

every day a little death... it's more than a song.

Dean Keller is one of the most important people in my life. he was responsible for my library career. I owe him more than I can say.

over the years Dean has producd a series of broadsides & other items under the imprint of Costmary Press. to celebrate 45 years of printing he's put out an anthology of 13 of the poems he has presentd. I'm happy to be in the company of Tom Kryss & legendary bookseller Jim Lowell.

Cleveland my Cleveland

the city of Terminal Tower has a new distinction. the website of Forbes Magazine lists it as #1 for bad winters   stating it takes "endurance" to survive the annual average of 60" of snow.

today Cleveland is on tap for another 6". while this towerless town now my home will have a quiet day before tomorrow's storm.

the winter that won't quit

don't know whether to blame El Nino or Al Gore but I'm weary of this. today's storm is the first of 3 predictd to hit here just this week.

as a former Ohioan I still trekkd to the gym this ayem while neighbors were before their fireplaces. but for me spring can't come soon enuf.

feeling special

during the week 2 of my oldest friends -- Ira Joel Haber & James Robert Parish -- both sent me goodie packages. they often gather obituaries of those they know I care abt & postcards & playbills   sometimes DVDs or magazines   & send them along. it always soothes my often wrinkld brow.

then today my newest friend Kevin McCollister sent a book he knew I'd like.

my thx to all of them.

The Arrow That is Hollywood Pierces the Soul That is Me for publication I cut the Evelyn Nesbit poem. I still like it. but I don't think it works in the final manuscript.

now the hard part. trying to find a publisher. altho I've been at this game for more than 40 years I'm not good at it. & right now I'm not sure where to go.

lawyer

that word is so oily it slips off the page. we each have our own memory of the shenanigans of that profession. I suspect for me it was the freeing of O. J. Simpson from murder charges.

the latest yuck in the field comes from Rip Torn's lawyer. he claims the actor didn't intend to break into a bank at all. of course not. he was so drunk he smashd windows to enter his own home.

J. D. Salinger (1919-2010)

I have to admit to not having read Salinger in decades. it was so important to me at one time I was afraid to reread Catcher. as a young writer I was under his spell when I wrote the short story "Accident" which I sent to the New Yorker . altho they didn't publish it I seem to recall I rec'd a personalizd rejection slip.

state of the onion

yes it was a thrill to hear the president mention Elyria in such an important speech. & this certainly is our best spoken president since Kennedy. but even tho he speaks so well one wonders what action he'll be able to achieve. part of the problem is the inability of that collection of dunces calld Congress to do their job. how difficult it was to watch the well-lacquerd Pelosi licking her lips like a Disney villainess while sitting beside Bobblehead Biden. & then there was that telling shot of Reid yawning.

but how lovely to see Obama scold the Supreme Court while the justices sat before him. maybe he has more backbone than his critics think.

27 January 2010

Jean Simmons (1929-2010)

while I was in Hollywood this beautiful actress died. she was a favorite of mine when I was a boy. a poem abt her is in "Sonny's Scrapbook" which originally appeard in Court Green & was collectd in It's All a Movie. & she remaind a favorite over the decades.

she appeard in so many classic films but probably my favorite performance of hers was in the lesser-known "Home Before Dark." I regret I was unable to see her on stage in "A Little Night Music" but with the help of the album I see her as Desiree in my mind.

her marriage to the swashbuckling Stewart Granger made them the Taylor/Burton of their day. (amusingly Simmons' affair with leading man Burton was years before Elizabeth's.) & of course her struggle with alcoholism simply made her closer to me.

26 January 2010

Obama in Elyria

while I was held hostage in my Coral Sands room by LA's torrential rains I watchd the president speak from my hometown. he was at the community college where Maggie Anderson & I read Sherwood Anderson's "Mid American Chants." he began by mentioning that Elyria mayor Bill Grace (who once proclaimd a Sherwood Anderson Day) had taken him to lunch at Smitty's -- one of Dad's hangouts.

my last publisher John Burroughs just notified me of this video he took of the presidential motorcade passing his house on Cleveland St. how odd to know that Obama went by the other end of Winckles St & past the Chinese restaurant where I used to get take-out for my folks & the funeral home where Dad was laid out.

the first half

of my long LA weekend was awful. relentless rain & cold. but then it cleard & I was able to see some friends.

but the real reason I went to LA was to see "The PeeWee Herman Show." I had tix for the day after Thxgiving at an intimate spot on Hollywood Blvd. but in process the show became too high tech for that space. when it was switchd to Club Nokia downtown the dates changd. so I had to fly in again just for the event.

& despite the crap weather when I arr'd it was worth the trip. Paul Reubens is a comedy master & his PeeWee creation indelible.

some of his fans became vocal over the venue/date change. to placate them Reubens gave the original ticket buyers unique access to him. after each performance he meets with them. I remember in the days of the tv series & Tim Burton films Reubens wd only appear in character. so it was at first stunning to see him come out in costume & be Paul Reubens. he answerd all questions & even left the stage to mingle with his excitd fans.

he sd that at first he dread'd doing the meet & greet but that as it's come along he now enjoys the experience. & he's quite humble & appreciative of the reception being given to the comeback of his most important character.

20 January 2010

tradition dictates paper as a gift for a 1st anniversary. the citizenry of Massachusetts gave the president such a humiliating defeat you cd call it a paper cut. except this one may bleed much longer than most.

one year isn't enuf time to reset the country after the terrible 8 of the previous regime. but I understand the frustration so many feel. we all expectd Obama to perform miracles & he hasn't.

I don't know where the country is going but this recent shift of the electorate back to the right is disturbing. part of the problem is the left seems to have lost its balls as well as attractive candidates.

early cinema

in 1975 I was keeping some notes on movies I was seeing at that time. for Edwin S. Porter's "The Great Train Robbery" (1903) I wrote:

Porter used 14 shots in a film lasting about 9 minutes. some half century later   Hitchcock constructed 70 camera setups for the 45 seconds of the shower scene in "Psycho."

a 1977 collaboration

going thru files I uncoverd this poem. I was askd by Akron Art Institute (its pre-museum name) to be part of "Concept"   a day's activities which included a performance by a local band by the name of DEVO.

investigating collaborations of poets I wrote a line & sent it to Paul Metcalf asking him to write the next line & send it on till there were 10 lines by 10 poets.

here's the result:

she pulled from her packsack
a sixpack of mead, a wineskin of sack
the bricabrac of her life and a used valentine
"I donno," she said, "this perfect
ly sibilant tree that shades me
drinks up the moon with many a mouth
cries back at me" her numbers, lights
alarmed, spawn dark fires chewing
darkness, "your heat makes pink tongues brittle, voices
bald like an old brunette's heart."

Gary Brockette (1947-2010)

his film career was almost 40 years but he never became a household name. altho his credits coverd many positions he mostly workd as an assistant director. however to me his shining moment in film was as an actor. he was the rich kid who had the naked swimming party in "The Last Picture Show."

I searchd the net & was unable to uncover a photo of that scene which in its day was quite bold. so I went to my personal film reference library. this is the only photo I found. it wasn't of the best quality & by the time I made a scan it got even worse. but here is a hint of Gary Brockette & his quick moment in film history.

Tom & I at Garford

we're side by side in the middle of the 2nd row:

in an e-mail Tom wrote
It is hard to believe we used to step into those recessed windows while playing hide and seek. If I go back to writing the architecture column for the paper I will give a mention to Garford School. It was designed by Silsbee who came to the area to supervise the construction of buildings at Oberlin College (the Arch on the Square and Men's Building I believe.) for his father back in Chicago. His father was the first man to hire Frank Lloyd Wright. Silsbee supervised the building of Garford School in two phases. The basement and the first floor were built several years before the top floor. I have walked over to look at it several times but cannot see the seam.

05 January 2010

baseball

is a topic you seldom see in my writing because the game doesn't figure much in my life. living so close to Cleveland I grew up with the Indians & had a period in my boyhood when I actually followd the game. looking back I realize part of that was a crush on Al Rosen.

the photo below shows me playing the game at Eastern Heights during that short window of Indians fanhood. (the formidable woman was my teacher Mrs. Beck.)

the reason I mention the game is a book I'm reading. The Spitball Knuckleball Book is a well-researchd well-designd volume which will enthrall true fans of the sport. & its author is someone I've known for over 61 years. Tom Mahl & I were students at Garford Elementary School before we became neighbors. where my backyard end'd his began.

in my last chapbook is a poem calld "Tom Mahl Reminds Me." this video -- shot in front of what was Garford school -- lacks quality but here it is anyway.

Jack Mulhall (1887-1979)

it's been sd he was one of J. C. Leyendecker's models for the Arrow Collar Man.

I met him once. it was 2 years before he died. I was at an event at the former Warner Brothers studio with a pair of his onetime leading ladies May McAvoy & Lois Wilson. May was especially thrilld to see him & gave him a big hug.

Mulhall made his film debut for D. W. Griffith in 1910. after a trio of Griffith pictures he did two for James Kirkwood (father of the novelist/playwright) before becoming a popular leading man of the silent era. he workd for Cecil B. DeMille   Frank Borzage   King Vidor. he did the first dual role in talkies & despite his charm startd sliding in the credits. today he's probably best rememberd for supporting roles in Flash Gordon & Buck Rogers features. but there's something admirable abt any movie career that lasts a half century.

last nite I saw Mulhall in a forgotten Poverty Row feature from 1932 calld "Love Bound." minor stuff. but he was the star. his fall to bit parts must've been difficult. but like so many silent era stars he did it with dignity.

more laundry

cleaning house is a New Years Day tradition. so when I returnd from the gym I got into it. by nightfall I was tired & watchd a Lawrence Tierney DVD.

this morning I've been out of the loop. it's the second day of the year. no holiday. but because of yesterday it doesn't feel like a routine day either. some of my sadness is gone. beginning another year with more dead friends & family is always tough. but there's still an edge of anxiety abt what the year will bring.

so I kept my bathrobe on too long as I did some cleansering here   some organizing there. clearly no direction. not like me. I prefer pointing to where I want to go then going there.

I finally got dressd. I have some wee tasks to accomplish. maybe wee is plenty for a day that isn't a holiday.

upright subjunctive

when I saw Freud's couch all I cd think was who cd possibly feel comfortable on those old rugs. then I got on the Vienna trolley & returnd to ElDorado Park to swim naked. now that was comfortable. & when I viewd the Venus of Willendorf she was naked & lookd comfortable too. in that same week I saw Mr. Vienna crownd at my hotel. he wasn't totally naked. but in that skimpy outfit & grimacing thru those muscle poses he didn't look comfortable at all. then there were the others who shared the long table at Figgulmuller's where we all felt comfortable eating weinerschnitzle that floppd over the edges of the plate.

I'm not sure why Freud put rugs on his couch. I suspect he had no design sense. but you'd think he'd have tried out the couch before having his patients recline on it. it's less an issue of a discerning eye than of a comfortable ass. but that was a long time ago. maybe Austrians then threw rugs all over their rooms.

"Brent Goodman woke up with the stars."

I read that on Facebook this morning. my simple reading is that he woke up in the middle of the nite.

I often wake up with stars. but they are movie stars who come to me in dreams. those who leave us their images on screen never die. & those screen images ooze into my head & bleed into my dreams.

Marilyn Monroe is a frequent visitor. I never met her in life but went to her grave again last month. the Marilyn I see in my dreams isn't the character she workd hard to present to the world. she's a quiet young woman who enjoys listening.

these nite movies my mind makes often disappear even as I lift my body from bed. but sometimes the forgotten ressurects itself with a word here   a line there. where else does poetry come from? it comes as much from the movies I see as from those my head makes in the nite.

so good morning Brent. how splendid we both woke up.

calming down

let Michelle Bachman pray against health care while the pope picks out his xmas frock. it's time for me to turn off the news & get silly.

all right. I feel a little better.

impeach Congress

Lieberman may be the biggest shit in the Senate but he doesn't hold the patent on dishonesty or greed. & then there are those neanderthals from Nebraska & Oklahoma. I don't remember ever having been so disgustd with our government. nothing seems to be working.

& what to make of Obama. the last president was so bad that we all had expectations too high for any mortal to meet. I still want this guy to succeed but we need action & not more speeches. if he isn't strong enuf to pass legislation when his is the majority party what will happen when the GOP makes its expectd gains next year.

I try not to be negative but the bombardment of bad news is daunting. & it coincides with the most depressing time of the year. screw the plum pudding. just pass a bowl of Valium till we're well into 2010.

17 December 2009

Jennifer Jones (1919-2009)

hair blacker than nite. bright red lips. & a white gown of classic simplicity. it was Jennifer Jones right there in front of me at one of those all-star parties I went to years ago in Beverly Hills. I'd heard she was private   even aloof. but this was a public event so I shyly went up to her. when she lookd at me I told her how beautiful she was. her smile was a dazzler. she reachd out her hand to me & askd my name. our conversation was brief. but it was one of those lovely moments one remembers on days like this.

"they've forgotten me"

that plaintive phrase is part of the final speech in The Cherry Orchard. it's spoken by the old butler Firs. altho I didn't see that production he was playd in 2006 by Lee Kissman.

while I was still on my 1st cuppa (& shortly after the morning news announcd that Tiger Woods had been named Ho of the Decade or something like that) I saw on Facebook that playwright Robert Patrick calld Kissman a "superstar."

I think the only time I ever saw Kissman was in "The Hawk" more than 40 years ago. O-Lan Jones & her mother were also in the cast. & I think I went to the play with Jean-Claude van Itallie.

reading that Kissman is/was a superstar has me cogitating. what exactly is fame? I've been contemplating this theme in my work for many a year. & I still have no clear answer. even if a poll were taken & Kissman came out as one of the dozen best actors in the history of off-Broadway does that kind of fame put him in the same category as one of the current famous-for-no reason folk like Paris Hilton. indeed in 50 years how many will remember either Kissman or Hilton?

perhaps all this is on my mind because last nite I sent Mike Busam a response to his e-mail suggesting a possible publisher for Making Circles. I wrote: I have the feeling that after my death my career will go one of 2 ways: either I'll be completely forgotten or I'll be "rediscoverd" & become another famous dead writer.

I really don't spend much time at all considering my own spec in the writing firmament. but I know I always will find intrigue in the theme of fame in the lives of others. it's especially poignant in my focus on film. I have always been a major fan of the silent era. & time after time I feel so sad when I see one of the great stars of that era playing a bit part in some forgotten talkie.

when I startd this ramble I had no idea where I was going. I suspect that by beginning with Lee Kissman I shd end with him. so if that philandering golfer is getting some kind of award this morning let me make Lee Kissman "Star of the Day." that won't make him any more famous to the universe but it makes me feel good to recognize someone who has given us a life in art.

yesterday's weather worse than day before.

when I arr'd on the 29th floor of Las Olas Grand to watch the boat parade the rain was so bad we cd hardly see down to ground. but we had a lucky break. it cleard up for the parade. then minutes after I returnd to the resort came the 1st in a series of torrential outbursts. & during the nite the winds were so fierce I cdn't sleep.
