Robert Drivas (1938-1986)

hard to believe that Bobby wd turn 70 today.

his career was primarily in the theater -- as both actor & director. however he had at least one great moment on film:

at the beginning of "The Illustrated Man" he walks naked into water. this was almost 40 years ago -- before every young actor was dropping trou on screen. it was one of those appearances that burnd into the psyche of gay men of my generation.

Bobby was a beautiful man   a complicated man   a dangerous man. I'll remember him forever.

My one encounter with Mr. Drivas was at the movies. He and Jimmy Coco were sitting in front on me at the old Waverly Theatre in the village (I forget what movie) and they just would not stop talking. I finally told them to shut the fuck up, of course knowing who they were. Nice tussie though.

I watched "The Illustrated Man" this evening/morning, and I was awestruck by Drivas's beauty and ability. Wow. I only wish I'd seen him in theatre.

A life cut short far too soon. Truly a beautiful man. If only I had been able to appreciate and follow his career sooner.
