I'm shockd to awake to such vitriol across the internet from gay people against the academy for failing to name "Brokeback Mountain" best picture. come on gay people you're supposd to know yr Hollywood history. the Oscar was inventd by a bunch of greedy businessmen as a means to increase the flow of shekels into the box office. it's never been abt art. just take a look at the award's history.
"Citizen Kane" lost best picture. Gloria Swanson in "Sunset Blvd" lost. Judy Garland in "A Star is Born" lost. Imelda Staunton in "Vera Drake" lost. James Dean lost best actor twice. Barbara Stanwyck lost best actress 4 times. Thelma Ritter lost supporting actress 6 times. Marilyn Monroe was never even nominatd. best director never went to Hitchcock or Altman or Scorcese.
the important thing abt "Brokeback Mountain" is that it's become a watershed film whose social importance will only grow with time. the academy can't diminish that.

I would like to have seen Brokeback do a little better at the Oscars. However, Crash is just as good a movie and it certainly deserved the props it got.
Would have been nice to see Hustle & Flow get a little more attention, too.
I must confess I didn't see "Crash." I knew it was helmd by the man who wrote that awful "Million Dollar Baby." so I had no interest in it. if I want to be manipulatd I can stay at home & watch soap operas.

Well said mister. So many to overlook.
You have a fine blog.
Thanks,

This was without a doubt the most disgusting Oscar awards show yet. Never mind the creeps and no talents that we had to look at ie Jamie Foxx,(can he just disappear please) Jessica Alba (who is she?) Will Farrell and Will Smith (hate them both), Jennifer Lopez (why is she working?, Jennifer Gardner (wish she did fall) the loathsome Ben Stiller and the loathsome wilson brothers. And that song, did they really give it an Oscar?? But the really worst moment of course was hearing Jack Nicholson read off Crash as the best film. My heart sank. This piece of crap will rank with the many awful Oscar choices made over the years like brave heart, gladitor, titantic, chicago, a beautiful mind, rocky, the sound of music, my fair lady, gigi, the greatest show on earth, Driving Miss Daisy, Chariots of Fire, Ben Hur, mrs. miniver, Out Of Africa, Kramer vs Kramer, the list goes on and on. Of course they had to give the Oscar to another little princess, and how brave of them to give best actor to Phillip seymour hoffman's impersonation of a fey gay man. Now that is the kind of gay man they could deal with. A most disgusting homophobic evening. Brokeback Mountain is in much better company losing the damn award, then if it had won. I mean has anyone watched Calvalcade lately??
"if I want to be manipulatd I can stay at home & watch soap operas."
And "Brokeback" wasn't a soap opera? Hah!
I never sd that BBM was the best film of the year. of course it has flaws. but what's fascinating for me is what it's become. it's part of the cultural landscape. not many films have that happen to them.
Ira Joel -- you're showing yr age. Jessica Alba is HUGE with the young set. I've only seen her in "Sin City." I tend to know her best as the person Cash Warren squires to big events. he's a behind-the-scenes film person but hot enuf to burn up some celluloid.
I guess I am getting old. I did see sin city but all those young tootsies look alike to me. No personalities and certainly very little talent. As Gore Vidal said "not having any talent isn't enough these days" or something like that. Also there are soap operas and then there are soap operas. Sirk's magnificent films of the 50's are certainly soaps but they are sooooooooooo wonderful. Nothing wrong with soaps. Hell you can say everything is a soap, how about pride and prejudice? that was pretty soapy. And yes Brokeback Mountain was the best film of the year according to me. And who the hell is cash warren, that name can't be real. Any pics. no doubt a gay boy or is he a cash boy.
Cash is the son of actor Michael Warren. he works as a personal assistant to a producer I think. he showd up on the red carpet with a shaved head & lookd ever so much hotter than Jessica.
Watched Crash on dvd last night, and I really liked it. The racism of all sorts is a global reality (living in France, I've seen it flare up recently here). Who hates whom? The answer is complex. The film is implausible, maybe, but so is life quite frequently. It made me laugh, cry, pause, and think. When that happens, I feel I've seen a good film.
Haven't seen BBM yet... I have HUGE expectations now, and hope I won't be underwhelmed.
